St. Ignatius 4 - Centerville 1 |
The 2010 season has been one to remember for the Centerville Elks. Losing to the nation's number one team takes none of the luster off statistics like these:
a 20-1-2 season record, 15 shutouts including five in tournament play, a GWOC championship, a District title and a Regional crown.
The state title game, Centerville's first appearance since 1996, was closer than the final score appears.
Ignatius, playing in its third title game in three years, consistently attacked the Elks' net in the first half but couldn't break through. Twice they had clean shots
on goal but couldn't finish. At the break it was tied 0-0, and the Elks seemed in a good position: They had weathered their stage fright, playing before thousands of fans in
intimidating Crew Stadium, and had played confident and strong in the final ten minutes before intermission. It looked like a tense second half was in store.
But with 25:23 left in the game and the score still 0-0 the Elks' vaunted defense suddenly fell apart. Within a three-minute span they surrendered three goals.
The first came on a bomb from close range that ricocheted off Kreger's hands and into the net. The second was perfectly placed in the left corner. And the third was
set up by a pretty pass inside the box. Centerville's hopes for their first state title since 1984 were gone in a blink. Another Ignatius score made it 4-0 before Adam
Holmes scored in the final minutes for the Elks' lone bright spot of the night.
Still, the runner-up trophy is a welcome piece of hardware for a program that regained its national prestige this season. In the latest ESPN poll the Elks had risen
to 8th in the country. And they finished the season ranked 5th in the state. Add in the Elks' first GWOC title since 2005 and this was a special season.
The Elks showed great balance on offense throughout the year. Goal leaders were Memme Onwudiwe 13, Andrew Roop 9, and Max Quellhorst, Max Spires, Slater Morgann and
Colin Barnhart 6 each. Assists leaders were Jake Stovall 9 and Ross Gabbard 8.
And on defense the Elks were sensational. They allowed only 7 goals all season and never more than one in a single game before the loss to Ignatius. Leading the way
was the GWOC's number one goalie Andrew Kreger and a talented defensive line of Stephen Acevedo, Brandon Klepach, Matt Morgann and Jake Stovall.
Individual honors were garnered by Matt Spires (Central Division Athlete of the Year and All-Conference), Max Quellhorst and Andrew Kreger (first team All-Division),
Memme Onwudiwe and Ross Gabbard (second team All-Division), and Brandon Klepach and Stephen Acevedo special mention All-Division).
Coach Brad Loveless was Central Division Coach of the Year.
Throughout the season it was the Elks' balanced team play that made them special. This was a team with role players but no minor players. Playing significant roles
throughout the year were Aaron Cooper, Brad Schluter, Alex Broadstock, Arthur Broadstock, Austin Bucher, Scott Wilkerson and Alex Hopkins.
Playing in their last high school game for the Elks were 11 seniors – Kreger, Cooper, Acevedo, Arthur Broadstock, Spires, Gabbard, Quellhorst, Onwudiwe, Bucher,
Matt Morgann and Klepach.
One streak that remains intact heading into next season is the Elks regular season unbeaten streak of 37 games.

Centerville 2 - Olentangy 1
Two of the state's – and the country's – best soccer programs clash
this Friday at Columbus Crew Stadium, when the Elks meet Cleveland
St. Ignatius for the Division I state title. It will match the
state's last two unbeaten teams – 22-0-0 Ignatius versus 20-0-2
Centerville.
Centerville advanced with a hard-fought win in the semi-finals over
a tough, aggressive Olentangy squad. The Elks scored twice in the
first half, on goals by Memme Onwudiwe and Andrew Roop, and then
held off an onslaught of shots by the Pioneers in their rugged
second-half comeback.
Onwudiwe frustrated the Pioneers' defense all night. Less than six
minutes into the game he fought off a couple of defenders in front
of the box and knocked in a goal that turned momentum Centerville's
way. The speedy senior forward attracted defenders throughout the
game and created openings for the Elks' offense.
Junior forward Roop took advantage of one of those openings shortly
before halftime. Roop corralled a pass from Memme and banged a shot
off the crossbar and into the net with 8:04 left to play. The
scoring play was set up by senior midfielder Ross Gabbard, who
fought off three defenders near midfield before crossing a perfect
pass to Onwudiwe near the top of the box.
With a two shot lead, and a defense that had not allowed a goal in
five tournament games, the lead looked safe heading into the second
half. But an Olentangy goal at 24:57 turned the final minutes into a
heated battle. Both teams squandered chances to score: Olentangy on
diving header that sailed over the net, the Elks on a breakaway shot
that misfired. But in the end it was the Elks' balanced team play
and solid defense that made the difference.
This has been an historic season for the Elks, who are the first
team to hit the 20-win mark in a season since 1996 – the last year
Centerville reached the Ohio State Finals. Friday's game could
determine the national champion – Ignatius is rated number one in
the country by ESPN and Centerville number eight, with the winner
most likely taking the number one spot. Game time is 7 p.m.
November 6, 2010
Centerville 1 - Sycamore 0
With less than five minutes to play, against an aggressive but tiring Sycamore team, Matt Spires netted a goal off Jake Stovall's assist propelling the Elks to
their first Southwest Ohio Regional crown since 2001 and a spot in the state's Final Four.
The Elks face Olentangy Orange this Tuesday at 7 p.m. at a field to be announced. Olentangy, 19-2 for the season, advanced with an upset of defending
state champion Gahanna-Lincoln, 2-1, in double overtime. The Pioneers are located in Lewis Center, about 15 miles north of Columbus, and compete in the Ohio
Capital Conference.
In recording their 15th shutout of the season – and fifth in five tournament games – the Elks overcame a shaky first half that saw Sycamore attack the net repeatedly
but without success. Twice the Elks broke through for good chances of their own – one coming off a nice assist from Ross Gabbard to Andrew Roop – but at halftime it was
0-0 and anybody's game.
The Elks quickly took control in the second half. By ramping up their offense, and effectively blunting Sycamore's aggressive play, Centerville controlled action
throughout most of the half while waiting for their chance to score. It came at the 4:56 mark on a throw-in from Stovall that glanced off Spires' head and into the net,
setting off a wild celebration by the Elks' players, who once again found a way to win by playing hard for the full 80 minutes.
The winning goal had a familiar ring to it for the Elks. Earlier in the week, in their regional semi-final win over St. Xavier, it was Spires' goal midway
through the second half that broke open that scoreless tie. And for Stovall, a defender who leads the team in assists, it was the ninth time
this season his throws have led to goals.
By raising their mark to 19-0-2 the Elks continue one of the most successful seasons in Centerville's storied soccer program. The Elks become the first
team since 1999 to win 19 games in a season and can become the first since 1996 to hit the 20-win mark. This welcome return to the Final Four is the
14th in school history for Ohio's winningest soccer program. The Elks' next goal is to become the school's seventh state finalist and first since 1996 to reach the title game.
Centerville won its only state title in 1984.

Centerville 3 - St. Xavier 0
Centerville continued its march toward the state Final Four with a convincing win over St. Xavier. After a scoreless first half, dominated by the Elks, a breakthrough goal by Matt Spires at the 23:57 mark catapulted Centerville into the Regional Finals.
The Elks will battle Sycamore this Saturday at 3 p.m. at Princeton High School. Centerville has not won the Regional title since 2001.
St. Xavier, which managed a tie with Centerville earlier in the season – one of only two blemishes on the Elks' record – was outmatched this time from the start. The Elks consistently threatened in the box, both off throw-ins and counter-attacks, and pounded away at the Bombers' defense until Spires' goal. The senior co-captain corralled the ball near the top of the box and bounced it through the scrum and into the right corner of the net past a lunging goalie.
Once ahead the Elks pushed quickly past a deflated Bomber defense, first on Memme Onwudiwe's goal off a pretty assist from Ross Gabbard, and then on a Slater Morgann strike assisted by both Onwudiwe and Adam Holmes. It was Holmes' kick off the crossbar that set up the third and final score.
This was perhaps the Elks' best overall team performance this season – high praise for a team riding an 18-0-2 mark. Defenders Brandon Klepach, Matt Morgann, Stephen Acevedo and Jake Stovall dominated play so thoroughly that goalie Andrew Kreger seldom needed to put his hands on the ball. It was the Elks' 14th shutout of the year and fourth consecutive shutout in tournament play.
Starting forward Andrew Roop was missing on offense, sidelined with a ligament injury, but back-ups Brad Schluter, Colin Barnhart, Alex Hopkins and Alex Broadstock filled in nicely for the Elks. In the middle, senior Max Quellhorst played a consistently strong game in helping to control the crucial center action.
Centerville continues to draw national attention, rising to 17th in the country in the latest ESPN poll.

Centerville 2 - Fairmont 0
Continuing their domination of their crosstown rivals, the Elks blanked Fairmont for the second time this season to capture the Dayton District crown and set up a rematch with Cincinnati St. Xavier in the
Regional semi-finals.
An unassisted goal by Brandon Klepach, coming off a corner kick at the 31:04 mark, took the starch out of Fairmont and paved the way for the Elks' win.
Slater Morgann erased any doubts about the outcome when he scored on an assist from Andrew Roop just before the half. The goal was Morgann's sixth of the season and Roop's fifth assist.
Led by goalie Andrew Kreger – with strong support from defenders Klepach, Jake Stovall, Stephen Acevedo and Matt Morgann – the Elks duplicated an early-season 2-0 win over Fairmont and in the process
notched their thirteenth shutout of the season. Each of their three postseason wins has been by a shutout.
Cincinnati St. Xavier and Centerville tied 1-1 when they met back on Sept. 23 in Cincinnati. Xavier enters the match with a 10-6-2 record after defeating Beavercreek 2-0 in the other Dayton District final
held last night. Xavier, like Centerville, has not allowed a goal in their three postseason games.
Game time for Tuesday's contest at Sycamore High School is 7 p.m.
October 25, 2010
Centerville 2 - Miamisburg 0
By defeating Miamisburg on the strength of two goals by Andrew Roop, the Elks maintained their clean slate for the season at 16-0-2 and took one step closer to the District championship.
Standing between the Elks and their first title since 2006 is a familiar foe – Fairmont – which advanced with a win over Northmont. The two neighborhood rivals meet Thursday at 8 p.m. in Northmont.
Roop, the flashy junior forward, scored his first goal with 19:49 left in the first half. His second came on a fantastic individual effort, weaving through three defenders in the box, with 27:51 left in the game. Ross Gabbard and Memme Onwudiwe assisted on the goals.
The Elks' defense recorded their 12th shutout of the year.
Centerville continues to climb in the polls. The Elks finished fifth in the final state poll and are currently listed 22nd in the nation by ESPN Rise.
October 21, 2010
Centerville 4 - Middletown 0
Readying themselves for what they hope will be a long tournament run, the Elks scored three times within three minutes late in the first half and coasted to an
opening game win in the Sectionals.
Only an outstanding effort by Middletown's goalie kept the score from being much worse.
By recording their eleventh shutout of the season Centerville raised its season mark to 15-0-2 and advanced to a District match next Monday against Miamisburg. The two GWOC foes will face off at 6 p.m. at Northmont High School.
Memme Onwudiwe opened the scoring at 26:54 on an assist from Matt Spires. Then between 11:51 and 9:14 left in the first half the Elks scored three times – once by Adam Holmes and twice by Colin Barnhart – to put the game away. Assisting on the goals were Ross Gabbard, Andrew Roop and Holmes.
Centerville is ranked fourth in the state and 22nd in the nation in the latest polls.
October 12, 2010
Centerville 2 - Wayne 1
Congratulations to Coach Brad Loveless and the Elks for clinching the GWOC Central Division title with their come-from-behind win at Wayne. In the process of capturing their first GWOC title since
2005 the Elks completed a 14-0-2 campaign, 5-0 in the GWOC, and extended their streak to 37 consecutive games dating back to 2008 without suffering a loss in the regular season.
Both Elks' goals came in the second half rally. Senior co-captain Ross Gabbard drove home a goal from a tough angle with 3:23 left on the clock to finish the comeback. Senior center midfielder Max Quellhorst assisted on the score.
It was Gabbard's second goal of the season and Quellhorst's fourth assist.
Centerville's first goal came at the 27:43 mark when junior Slater Morgann, who has been battling an injury for several games, knocked in a goal inside the box. Slater's goal was his fourth of the year
and came off an assist by Jake Stovall. Stovall, a sophomore starter on defense, has a team-high eight assists coming on throw-ins.
Throughout the game the Elks threatened scores inside the box, often banging away two or three shots in succession, but couldn't find the net until the second half. Both in corner kicks and shots
on goals the Elks dominated play. The second-half surge was a fitting ending for a team that has thrived all season with balance on offense and hard-nosed play on defense.
Senior goalie Andrew Kreger, statistically the number one rated keeper in the GWOC, was rock-solid in the net again. His kick save late in the second half turned away a shot that easily could have
cost the Elks the game. The defensive line of Brandon Klepach, Matt Morgann, Stephen Acevedo and Stovall was steady throughout, and the Elks finish the regular season allowing only six goals in 16 games.
Offensive leaders for the regular season are Memme Onwudiwe (10 goals), Andrew Roop and Quellhorst (six goals each), and Matt Spires, Colin Barnhart and Morgann (4 goals each). Assist leaders
behind Stovall are Gabbard (five) and Brad Schluter and Quellhorst (four each).
The Elks head into tournament play ranked in the state and national polls and seeded first in the Dayton District. Centerville's first game is scheduled for Thursday, October 21, against the winner of Middletown vs. Edgewood.
October 9, 2010
Centerville 0 - Lakota West 0
Playing their last home game of the regular season, The Elks dominated Lakota but had to settle for a scoreless tie. Centerville is now 13-0-2.
Lakota's goalie turned away several shots, including a diving, fingertip stop early in the second half, to snap the Elks' five-game winning streak.
The defense continues to shine as Centerville recorded their tenth shutout of the season.
Centerville wraps up the regular season Tuesday at Wayne. Game time is 7:30 p.m. preceded by the JVs at 5:30 p.m. The JVs lost to Lakota 2-0.
October 5, 2010
Centerville 2 - Northmont 0
Memme Onwudiwe scored the game winner late in the first half on an assist from Jake Stovall. It was Memme's 10th goal of the season – five in the last four games – and Jake's team-high seventh assist.
Andrew Roop put the game away at the 17:35 mark of the second half on an assist from Max Quellhorst.
This was the 9th shutout of the season for an Elks' defense that has not allowed more than one goal in any game this year.
Centerville is now 13-0-1 for the year and 4-0 in the GWOC. The Elks are ranked fifth in the state and 40th in the nation.
The Elks' next game is Saturday at home against Lakota West. Game time is 1 p.m. The JVs, who scored in the final seconds to defeat Northmont 1-0, play the opener at 11 a.m.
October 4, 2010
Centerville 3 - Talawanda 0
Memme Onwudiwe scored twice as the Elks dominated Talawanda on Senior Night. The win raised Centerville's season mark to 12-0-1 and extended their regular season streak to 34 games in a row without a loss.
Playing the second of three games over a four-day span, the Elks scored at the 12:06 mark when Onwudiwe headed Jake Stovall's sideline throw into the net. The assist was Jake's sixth of the season – tops on the team.
Onwudiwe scored again early in the second half on an assist from Scott Wilkerson. Wilkerson tracked down a pass from Max Quellhorst in the right corner and crossed to a charging Memme, who headed the ball home for his team-leading 9th goal of the season.
Colin Barnhart closed out the scoring at 7:36, outracing two defenders before sending the ball past Talawanda's goalie.
Pre-game ceremonies honored seniors Andrew Kreger, Aaron Cooper, Stephen Acevedo, Arthur Broadstock, Matt Spires, Ross Gabbard, Max Quellhorst, Memme Onwudiwe, Austin Bucher, Matt Morgann and Brandon Klepach. Senior cheerleaders are Kelsey Burr, Brooke Dean and Chelsia DeShayes.
The Elks face three tough games to close out the regular season – beginning Tuesday night with a GWOC Central Division match at Northmont. JVs play at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 7:30 p.m.
The JVs blanked Talawanda 5-0.
October 2, 2010
Centerville 2 - Mason 1
On a windy afternoon in Mason, the Elks exacted a measure of revenge against the team that bumped them from the District tournament last season. Senior co-captain Ross Gabbard had two exceptional assists in leading Centerville to their 11th win of the season with only one tie.
The Elks fell behind in the first half when a wind-aided free kick from near midfield ended up in the net. The second half, however, belonged to the Elks who took advantage of the wind at their backs and attacked the Comets' goal repeatedly.
Andrew Roop scored first at the 27:09 mark, corralling a bouncing ball in front of the goal to net his fifth of the season, then Memme Onwudiwe scored the game-winner with 11:36 left in the contest. Gabbard set up the winning goal by skirting a defender on the left wing, racing to the baseline and angling a pass to Memme who directed the ball into the right corner.
Gabbard's two assists give him five for the season – tops on the team. Onwudiwe now has seven goals to lead the team.
Once again the win was a team effort. Andrew Kreger made a fine diving save in the second half to preserve the win and senior Austin Bucher filled in nicely at wing for injured starter Slater Morgann. Bucher, normally a defender, played a strong offensive game battling the wind and a very good Mason defense.
Centerville hosts Talawanda on Senior Night this Monday at 7:30 p.m. The JVs, who won 1-0 over Mason, play at 5:30 p.m.
September 28, 2010
Centerville 2 - Fairmont 0
Centerville continued their domination of the Firebirds – now 30 wins, one loss and four ties in their longtime rivalry – with a shutout at the Elks stadium. The Elks raised their season mark to 10-0-1 and took a solid grip on first place in GWOC's Central Division.
After a scoreless first half with countless shots on goal, the Elks broke through at 29:59 on a goal by Memme Onwudiwe assisted by Andrew Roop.
Max Quellhorst put the game away with 7:55 left in the match when he took a pass from Matt Spires at the top of the box and banged in a shot. Onwudiwe and Quellhorst now share the team lead with six goals each.
The Elks have two GWOC games remaining on their schedule against Northmont and Wayne – both on the road – before they can claim their first GWOC title since 2005.
Next up for Centerville is Mason this Saturday on the road at noon. The game pits two of the state's top ten teams – 5th ranked Mason and 6th ranked Centerville – preceded by the JV game at 10 a.m.
The JVs continued their winning ways with a 6-0 win over Fairmont.
September 25, 2010
Centerville 4 - Xenia 0
The Elks bounced back from a disappointing tie earlier in the week by scoring twice inside the first six minutes and coasting to a 4-0 win over Xenia. The Elks remain unbeaten through ten games at 9-0-1.
Memme Onwudiwe and Matt Spires scored goals within 37 seconds of each other to put the game away early for the Elks. Memme's header goal came off a throw-in assist from Jake Stovall and was followed seconds later by Matt Spires' line drive goal from 20 yards. Assisting on Spires' goal was Slater Morgann. Shortly before the half Andrew Roop upped the lead to 3-0 on a goal in front of the net assisted by Arthur Broadstock.
Max Quellhorst's tap-in goal early in the second half – coming off Stovall's second assist of the night and his team-high fifth assist of the season – rounded out the scoring for the Elks.
Centerville heads into the meat of their schedule beginning next Tuesday when Fairmont invades the stadium. The JVs, 5-0 winners over Xenia, play at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 7:30 p.m.
September 23, 2010
Centerville 1 - St. Xavier 1
Max Quellhorst's goal in the closing minutes salvaged a tie for the Elks, who remained unbeaten on the season through nine games and extended their unbeaten streak to 31 regular season games dating back to the 2008 season.
Centerville had numerous chances to score including a goal waved off in the opening minutes and two other shots that bounced off the posts. But it wasn't until 7:33 left in the game that Quellhorst scored on an unassisted goal from 18 yards out after a scramble in the box. The goal was his fourth of the season, tops on the team with Memme Onwudiwe, and one ahead of Andrew Roop, Matt Spires, Slater Morgann and Colin Barnhart – all key players in the Elks' balanced offensive attack.
Xavier's only goal came on a fluke play early in the second half, when senior keeper Andrew Kreger cleared a ball that hit off a Xavier player's leg and bounded into the net. The Elks' defensive backfield of Brandon Klepach, Jake Stovall, Stephen Acevedo and Matt Morgann held steady throughout the closing minutes and Kreger made two excellent stops in the second half to preserve the tie.
Centerville, which is now 8-0-1 and entered the game ranked third in the state, hosts Xenia this Saturday at 7 p.m. at the stadium following the JV game at 5 p.m. The JVs were nipped 1-0 by Xavier for only their second loss of the season.
September 21, 2010
Centerville 11 - Springfield 1
Nine different Elks scored in an 11-1 rout of Greater Western Ohio Conference foe Springfield.
Leading the scoring parade was Colin Barnhart with three goals. Ross Gabbard scored one goal and added three assists. Also scoring were Memme Onwudiwe, Max Quellhorst, Matt Spires, Alex Broadstock, Brad Schluter, Scott Wilkerson and Brandon Klepach. Schluter recorded three assists with one each by Wilkerson, Jake Stovall, Adam Holmes and Klepach.
Centerville is now 8-0-0 (2-0-0 in the GWOC) and travels Thursday to St. Xavier for a 7:15 p.m. match. JVs play at 5:30 p.m.
September 14, 2010
Centerville 3 - Beavercreek 1
For the first time since 2004 the Elks defeated their Greater Western Ohio Conference division rivals, 3-1, in a battle of two of the state's top-rated teams.
Centerville entered the game ranked third and Beavercreek seventh in the latest state polls. But the Elks dominated the first half, building a 2-0 lead behind goals by Andrew Roop and Max Quellhorst, and threatened to turn it into a rout.
Roop's tap-in goal at the 18:52 mark came off an assist from Memme Onwudiwe. Less than four minutes before halftime Quellhorst headed in Jake Stovall's powerful throw from the right sideline. Stovall, a sophomore starter on defense, has emerged as one of the Elks'
strongest offensive weapons with three assists already this season off his sideline throw-ins.
The second half was a bruising affair. Nine minutes in the Beavers scored their first goal of the game – and the first surrendered this season by senior keeper Andrew Kreger – on a header inside the box.The goal snapped a string of five consecutive shutouts for the Elks.
Roop's second goal of the game came off an assist from Brad Schluter with 19 minutes left and iced it for the Elks. Roop, Onwudiwe and Slater Morgann now share the team lead with three goals apiece.
The Elks are 7-0-0 overall, 1-0-0 in the Central Division, and are building up a head of steam for the rugged second-half schedule.
Springfield visits the stadium next Tuesday in another GWOC division game starting at 7:30 p.m. The JVs, who dropped their first game of the season 1-0 to Beavercreek, play at 5:30 p.m.
September 9, 2010
Centerville 1 - Alter 0
A goal by Matt Spires in the final minutes, set up by a beautiful assist from Brandon Klepach, sparked the Elks to their sixth straight win of the season.
Keeper Andrew Kreger's fingertip save in the final seconds preserved the win and the Elks' fifth consecutive shutout.
For the second year in a row Spires broke the hearts of Alter fans.
Last season his late-game goal earned Centerville a tie. This time his header inside the box, off a mad scramble for Klepach's free kick from midfield, brought the Elks a hard-fought win.
Time and again the Elks threatened inside the box. Memme Onwudiwe twice had kicks bounce off the posts. But not until the 6:17 mark of the second half did they net the goal that held up during Alter's furious last-minute rush.
Kreger's save came in the final seconds on a ball headed high into the net. The talented senior leaped high and flicked the ball off his fingertips and over the crossbar as time expired. It was a fitting ending for a team that has prospered from a hard-nosed defense all season.
Sharing the spotlight on defense were seniors Matt Morgann, Stephen Acevedo and Klepach along with sophomore Jake Stovall. The Elks' steady midfield of Max Quellhorst, Ross Gabbard, Slater Morgann and Spires controlled the momentum most of the game, while Onwudiwe, Andrew Roop and Brad Schluter forced the action at the net.
The Elks have little time to relax and celebrate with a trip to Beavercreek next on the schedule. JVs play at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
Jayvees stayed unbeaten with a 2-0 win over Alter.
September 7, 2010
Centerville 1 - Troy 0
The Elks scored early in the second half, on a header by Slater Morgann, to hold off Troy in a game shortened by lightning.
Centerville sophomore Jake Stovall assisted on the goal with a beautiful throw-in from the sideline. Morgann's goal, his third of the season, came with 37:06 on the clock – just seven minutes before the game was called.
Elks' goalie Andrew Kreger preserved the win and the shutout – Centerville's fourth shutout in a row – with a great save midway through the first half.
The win raised Centerville's season mark to 5-0 and set the stage for Thursday's big match with rival Alter. Varsity game time is 7:30 p.m. at the stadium. The JV team, which blanked Troy 6-0 to also stay unbeaten, kicks off at 5:30 p.m.
September 4, 2010
Centerville 1 - Moeller 0
Centerville ran it's regular season streak to 26 games in a row without a loss with an impressive shutout at Moeller.
Sophomore forward Brad Schluter hammered home the game winner early in the second half on an assist from Andrew Roop. It was Schluter's first goal as a varsity Elk and it pushed Centerville's season mark to 4-0 - with all four wins coming on the road.
The Elks' defense continues to impress. Goalie Andrew Kreger and the starting back line of Brandon Klepach, Austin Bucher, Matt Morgann and Stephen Acevedo recorded their third consecutive shutout.
The Elks last regular season loss came against Beavercreek, 3-0, back on Sept. 16 of the 2008 campaign.
Centerville hosts Troy this Tuesday at the Elks home stadium. JV game starts at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
August 31, 2010
Centerville 2 - Vandalia Butler 0
Early goals by Matt Spires and Slater Morgann propelled Centerville to their third consecutive road win opening the season.
The Elks' offense created several scoring chances in the second half but couldn't find the net, while their defense dominated the Aviators so thoroughly goalkeeper Andrew Kreger faced only one serious shot on goal the entire game.
Senior co-captain Spires fired home a bullet less than eight minutes into the game, delivered from the top of the box, on an assist from fellow senior and co-captain Ross Gabbard. Less than six minutes later Morgann recorded his second goal of the season on an assist from Spires.
The Elks face a more serious threat this Saturday when they travel to Cincinnati Moeller for a 3 p.m. contest. The Elks JV, coming off a 9-0 trouncing of Butler to remain unbeaten, play at 1 p.m.
August 28, 2010
Centerville 2 - Westerville North 0
Playing against a very physical team, on a bumpy grass field that challenged both teams all afternoon, the Elks survived 2-0 on a pair
of second-half goals by juniors Andrew Roop and Slater Morgann.
Westerville North, a traditionally tough Division I opponent that finished runner-up in the Central District last year and won the state
title as recently as 2003, held the Elks scoreless in the first 40 minutes but surrendered a goal inside the first 30 seconds of the second half.
Roop, a speedy forward who last season was the second highest goal scorer for the Elks, tallied his first of the season on a follow-up inside the
box. Sophomore Brad Schluter set up the goal – and recorded his first assist as a varsity Elk – on a nice header that caromed off the goalie to Roop.
With less than seven minutes left in the game Morgann sealed the win on a nice goal inside the box. It came off a throw-in from sophomore
Jake Stovall, a defensive starter who shows promise of becoming a consistent offensive threat with his ability to deliver deep,
powerful throw-ins from the sideline.
Final shot totals weren't available but Centerville threatened several times in the second half, once on a bicycle kick by junior Adam
Holmes that bounced off the crossbar, while he Elks defense, behind goalie Andrew Kreger, held the Warriors to one shot on goal
in the first half and one legitimate scoring chance in the second.
The Elks are 2-0 and play the third of four consecutive away games to kick off the season when they travel to Vandalia Butler on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. league match. The Elks JV team plays at 5:30 p.m.

Centerville 4 - Lebanon 1
Memme Onwudiwe scored three goals and Max Quellhorst added another with two assists as Centerville kicked off the season
with a convincing 4-1 win over host Lebanon. The Elks bolted to a 3-0 halftime lead behind Onwudiwe's exceptional play. The speedy and physical senior plowed through three defenders
early in the first half to score the Elks' first goal of the season and added a second less than three minutes before halftime on a nice assist from Adam Holmes.
In between was a left-footed goal by Quellhorst, the senior center midfielder, from the top of the box.
Head Coach Brad Loveless rested his starters for most of the second half as the Elks coasted home. The final statistics were telling:
Centerville had 16 shots, 8 on goal, to Lebanon's 6 shots total.
Centerville's defense looks as stout as ever, built on a solid back line of veterans and newcomers, with the only dent a meaningless Warriors' goal late in the game.
Defenders Brandon Klepach, Austin Bucher, Stephen Acevedo and Matt Morgann held a steady wall in front of experienced and skilled goalkeeper Andrew Kreger.
Centerville faces a daunting schedule this season with their most competitive games coming on the road. Their next match is Saturday at Westerville North in Columbus.
The Elks JV team, coming off a 4-0 win over Lebanon, play at 1 p.m. and the varsity at 3 p.m.
