2009 Varsity, Reserve A and Reserve B Scores & Highlights

Saturday October 31, 2009
Mason 3 - Centerville 1
The Elks battled hard against a tough, talented Mason team but suffered their first loss of the season and finished runner-ups in the District.

Centerville's final mark of 11-1-6 was remarkable for a team that returned only one starter from last year's squad and was faced with a rebuilding year. Their lone veteran – All-Conference defender Stephan Grunwald – was forced to miss the season finale due to illness.

Junior Matt Spires, who switched from midfield to sweeper in Grunwald's place, scored the Elks' only goal on a penalty kick late in the second half. The Elks peppered Mason with shots in the final minutes without success, and the final tally showed both teams with 12 shots on goal for the game.

The Elks' defense, which recorded 12 shutouts this season, deserves special recognition. Mason's three goals were the most surrendered in one game by Centerville all year. Only twice before – in a 6-2 rout of Fairborn and 2-2 tie with Alter – did the Elks give up more than a single goal.

Instrumental in the Elks' successful season were seniors Mitch Carnes, Matt Click, Chris Dempe, Kevin Gilliland, Grunwald, Mike Hartman and Brandon Pauley.

Congratulation to all our players on a fine soccer season and to our seniors players that will be graduating from Centerville; to the all the coaches on a job well done this year and to the parents and student body that supported Elks soccer this season.

Centerville 1 - Sidney 0
The Elks scored off a corner kick – their first corner kick goal of the year – to upend Sidney and advance to the District finals.

Mitch Carnes netted the ball during a scramble in the box midway through the second half. Carnes' goal, first of the season for the senior defender, was assisted by Colin Barnhart.

Centerville dominated play for most of the first half and much of the second, outshooting the Yellow Jackets 16-2 for the game, and the Elks' vaunted defense rose to the occasion when needed. The closest Sidney score came in the closing minutes of the game on a rush to the net when two Jackets' shots were rejected by goalie Andrew Kreger. The shutout was the Elks third in a row and 12th of the year in 17 games.

Centerville's offense kept the pressure on throughout the game and Coach Loveless substituted liberally to keep his speedy front line fresh. The result was a one-sided affair that kept the Elks undefeated at 11-0-6 and ready for a match with one of the Cincinnati area's best teams.

The Elks will face Mason, number one seed in the Cincinnati District 2 upper bracket and ranked third in the state, entering the game with a 16-1-2 record. Game time this Saturday at Lakota West High School is 7:30 p.m.

Saturday October 24, 2009
Centerville 2 - Miamisburg 0
Centerville opened tournament play with a convincing win over Miamisburg, outshooting the Vikings 19-1 and duplicating their 2-0 victory in the opening game of the season.

Centerville's first goal came off a direct kick midway through the opening half and resulted from a set play that coach Loveless used for the first time this season. Lining up just outside the box, Adam Holmes chipped the ball over a wall of defenders to Matt Spires, who headed it into the right corner. It was Spires' 5th goal of the season and Holmes' 2nd assist.

Centerville's final goal came in the closing minutes on an outstanding shot from 20 yards out by defender Brandon Klepach, who burst across midfield, maneuvered into position and booted it into the left corner for his second score of the season.

This was the 11th shutout in 17 games for the Elks' smothering defense. Andrew Kreger and Kevin Gilliland shared goaltending duties against a spirited Viking team that won the Southern Division of the GWOC.

Centerville upped its record to 10-0-6 and now faces a talented Sidney team, champions of the Northern Division and owners of an 11-4-2 season record, next Tuesday in the second round. Game time is 6 p.m. at Northmont.

Tuesday October 13, 2009
Centerville 0 - Wayne 0
Centerville dominated Wayne in the second half but couldn't score in their regular season finale. The tie dropped the Elks to 9-0-6 for the season and left them alone in second place behind Fairmont in the GWOC race.

The Elks out shot Wayne 10-4 in the second half – and 13-6 for the game – but failed to score for the third time in 15 games.

Behind goalie Andrew Kreger the Elks' superb defense recorded their 10th shutout of the season. Defensive stalwarts Stephan Grunwald, Matt Spires, Mitch Carnes, Matt Morgann and Brandon Klepach continued their dominating play against the Warriors.

Heading into tournament action next week the Elks take solace in defeating league champs Fairmont in their head-to-head battle while finishing unblemished in the loss column. They were the only GWOC team without a loss this season and the first Centerville team to go undefeated during the regular season since the 2002 campaign.

Centerville's first tournament game is Saturday, October 24, against the winner of Miamisburg vs.Trotwood. Game time is 1 p.m. at the Elks' Soccer Stadium. Centerville is seeded #2 in the Dayton Division behind Beavercreek.

The Elks JV team finished the season undefeated with a 1-0 win over Wayne. Congratulations on a fine season!

Saturday October 10, 2009
Centerville - Lakota West
The contest at Lakota West was postponed due to unfavorable field conditions and will not be rescheduled.

Tuesday October 6, 2009
Centerville 3 - Fairmont 1
In 33 previous meetings, Fairmont has beaten Centerville in soccer just one time. This year was no different.

Centerville scored two early goals – by Matt Spires and Andrew Roop – and held on for a satisfying win over their neighborhood rivals on a rainy, windy night.

The win pushes Centerville back into a second-place tie with Beavercreek, who tied Northmont on Tuesday, and leaves both teams one point behind Fairmont in the GWOC standings. All three teams have one league game left on their schedules.

Spires, the junior defender who was moved to midfield for this game, ignited the Elks' offense on a bullet from the right-hand top of the box inside of 10 minutes. Memme Onwudiwe assisted on the goal.

Roop, a sophomore, recorded the first of his two goals midway through the half on a scramble inside the box. His second score – and his fifth of the season – iced the game with 12 minutes left on a beautiful shot from the left side of the box. Assisting on Roop's goals were Max Quellhorst and Brandon Klepach.

Centerville remains unbeaten at 9-0-5 with two games left on the schedule.

The Elks' Jayvees continued to dominate their opponents by cruising past Fairmont, 4-0, to remain unbeaten for the season.

The Elks next game comes this Saturday when they travel to state-ranked Lakota West. Game times are 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Tuesday September 29, 2009
Centerville 1 - Northmont 1
Junior Matt Morgann steered a looping 35-yard shot into the goal midway through the second half to help Centerville salvage a 1-1 tie against Northmont on Senior Night at the stadium.

The tie kept Centerville unbeaten at 8-0-5 but dropped them behind both Beavercreek and Fairmont in the GWOC race.

Northmont scored early, inside seven minutes, and then held on the rest of the way, managing only 4 shots on goal to Centerville's 14.

After a tentative first half, the Elks went on the attack early in the second half and kept up the pressure throughout – firing 11 shots to the 'Bolts 3 – but couldn't break through until Morgann's improbable goal from the right sideline. A shot by Andrew Roop in the final seconds, hammered at the goalie from deep inside the box, was batted away to preserve the tie.

Despite the disappointing tie, the Elks stayed within shouting distance in the heated GWOC race heading into next Tuesday's match with neighboring rival Fairmont. Game times at Fairmont are 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The JV Elks whipped up on Northmont, 5-1, to stay unbeaten.

Saturday September 26, 2009
Centerville 4 - Anderson 0
The Elks turned in some of their finest offensive plays of the season in a rout of Cincinnati Anderson to remain unbeaten through 12 games.

Coming off a tie earlier in the week with rival Beavercreek, Centerville looked relaxed and energized, scoring on a beautiful goal by Ross Gabbard (assisted by Brandon Pauley) just four minutes into the match and never looking back.

Brandon Klepach's long unassisted goal at the 20-minute mark, the junior defender's first of the season, pushed the Elks into a 2-0 lead and set the stage for a dominating second half.

The Elks turned to their underclassmen in the final 40 minutes and weren't disappointed. Adam Holmes and Alex Hopkins, both sophomores, scored on excellent individual efforts. Slater Morgann, another sophomore, assisted on both goals.

Senior goalie Kevin Gilliland led the Elks' superb defense to their ninth shutout of the season.

Centerville, after returning only one starter from last year's state-ranked team, now stands a somewhat surprising 8-0-4 entering the pivotal last four games of the season: Northmont (Sept. 29), Fairmont (Oct. 6), Lakota West (Oct. 10) and Wayne (Oct. 13). The Elks remain tied with Beavercreek for second in the GWOC.

The Elks will celebrate Senior Night next Tuesday against Northmont at the Soccer Stadium. Game times are 5:30 and 7:30.

Tuesday September 22, 2009
Centerville 0 - Beavercreek 0
Centerville's rock-solid defense racked up its eighth shutout in 11 games, a 0-0 tie against arch-rival Beavercreek at the Elks Soccer Stadium, leaving both teams unbeaten and tied for second in the GWOC.

This much-anticipated match-up between last year's state-rated powerhouses, who both graduated the bulk of their players, pitted two raw but fundamentally sound teams. The result was a tight defensive battle that saw only 6 shots on goal by each team. The Elks' defense, in particular, did its part by holding the Beavers to only two shots in the second half.

Centerville's JV squad also played Beavercreek JV to a 0-0 tie to remain unbeaten on the season.

Centerville is now 7-0-4 for the season and travels Saturday to Anderson. Game times are noon and 2 p.m.

Saturday September 19, 2009
Centerville 2 - Worthington 0
Scoring twice on deflected throw-ins, the Elks managed an unorthodox 2-0 win over traditionally strong Thomas Worthington in Columbus.

Twice in the second half a Centerville in-bounds pass bounced off a Worthington player and into the net: The first skidding off a defender's head, the second ricocheting off a Cardinal player's leg. Matt Spires was credited with both unassisted goals.

Worthington, three-time state champions during the period between 1991 and 2001, managed only three shots on goal and never seriously threatened against the Elks' tight defense, which has now recorded 7 shutouts in 10 games. The Elks remain unbeaten at 7-0-3 while the Cardinals fall to 3-2-3.

In the early match the JV Elks played to a 0-0 draw.

Centerville prepares next for unbeaten and GWOC arch-rival Beavercreek next Tuesday. Game times are 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the Centerville Soccer Stadium.

Thursday September 17, 2009
Centerville 2 - Alter 2
Junior defender Matt Spires bombed in a goal from 30 yards out with less than three minutes left in the game to help Centerville escape with a 2-2 tie against Alter at the Soccer Stadium.

Spires, who scored 7 goals last season playing primarily at wing, tallied his first goal of the season as the Elks rallied to remain undefeated. Assisting on the score was Max Quellhorst.

Alter, who also remained undefeated at 3-0-4, jumped into a 2-0 lead in the first half and still led 2-1 at the half following a late goal by the Elks' Ross Gabbard on an assist from Slater Morgann.

The Elks dominated play in the second half, outshooting the Knights 9-2, but trailed late in the game as Alter turned protective and collapsed around the goal. Numerous times the Elks threatened but were turned away before Spires knotted the score from outside. The Elks finished with 16 shots to 10 for Alter.

The Centerville Reserve A team battled to a 0-0 tie against Alter.

Next game up is Saturday, Sept. 19, at Columbus Worthington. Game times are noon and 2 p.m.

Tuesday September 15, 2009
Centerville 5 - Springfield 0
The Elks continued their winning ways with a 5-0 win over an undermanned Springfield team. Centerville is now 6-0-2 heading into their neighborhood battle with undefeated Alter on Thursday at the stadium.

The Elks, after missing several scoring opportunities in the early going, broke through at the 26-minute mark on a goal by Brandon Pauley with an assist from Andrew Roop. Leading 1-0 at the half against winless Springfield (0-8-0), Centerville finally pulled away with goals by Colin Barnhart, Ross Gabbard, Alex Hopkins and Mike Hartman. Assisting were Max Quellhorst, Hartman, Pauley and Hopkins. Final stats showed Centerville with 49 shots to Springfield's 0.

In the early game, the JV Elks remain undefeated by downing their Springfield JV counterparts 11-0.

Centerville hosts Alter on Thursday night, September 15. Match times are 5:00 and 7:00 pm.

Thursday September 10, 2009
Centerville 6 - Fairborn 2
Junior striker Memme Onwudiwe scored four goals in leading the Elks to a 6-2 win over Fairborn at the Soccer Stadium. Centerville held a solid 3-0 lead midway through the second half before Fairborn scored twice in a 10-minute span. Sophomore Slater Morgan righted the ship with a goal from the top of the box and Onwudiwe added two more scores in the closing minutes as the Elks pulled away.

Centerville's defense completely shut down Fairborn most of the night, the Elks finishing with a 28-2 advantage in shots on goal. Also scoring for Centerville was Alex Hopkins. Assists by Andrew Roop, Colin Barnhart, Max Quellhorst and Matt Click.

The still undefeated JV Elks dealt a shutout to the Fairborn Skyhawks Thursday night with a final score of 8-0. Brad Schluter and Scott Wilkerson each contributed a goal. Nick Schlagheck finished with two. Austin Woodall contributed an impressive one half of the team's total with four goals!

Both undefeated Elk teams travel next Tuesday September 15, to Springfield. Match times are 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday September 8, 2009
Centerville 2 - Vandalia Butler 0
In a game shortened by lightning, the Elks defeated host Vandalia-Butler 2-0 to stay undefeated on the season. Centerville is now 4-0-2.

Andrew Roop scored on an assist from Ross Gabbard and Colin Barnhart was credited with a goal on a deflected shot by Alex Hopkins. The Elks dominated the action with 7 shots to none for the Aviators.

Next game for the Elks is Thursday, September 10, when they host Fairborn at the Soccer Stadium. Game times are 5:30 and 7:30.

Saturday September 5, 2009
Centerville 0 - Moeller 0
Goalkeepers Andrew Kreger and Kevin Gilliland combined to shut out Cincinnati Moeller on Saturday night at the soccer stadium, but the Elks had to settle for a 0-0 tie. Centerville controlled the ball most of the game, attempting 10 shots to Moeller's 6, but couldn't find the net. Centerville is now 3-0-2 on the season while Moeller is 1-1-2. The Elks travel to Vandalia Butler next Tuesday, Sept. 8, for 5:30 and 7:30 games against the Aviators.

Thursday September 3, 2009
Centerville 2 - Springboro 0
In a rough and tumble battle with host Springboro, the Elks parlayed a goal by Colin Barnhart in the first half and a late goal by Memme Onwudiwe into a 2-0 win in a very loosely officiated GWOC contest. Matt Spires and Max Quellhorst assisted on the goals.

Centerville's stout defense, which has allowed only one goal this season, held the winless Panthers to only three shots. The Elks managed 11 shots in raising their season mark to 3-0-1.

In the JV match, after a slow first half ended in a 0-0 tie, the Elks came alive to defeat the Springboro Panthers 3-0 with goals by Alex Broadstock, Ryan Cook, and Brad Schluter. A fourth goal made by Scott Wilkerson as the time clock ticked off the last second was not awarded to the Elks, but it didn't spoil the 3-0 shutout.

The Elks return to action Saturday Sept. 5, hosting Cincinnati Moeller at the soccer stadium. Game times are 5:00 and 7:00.

Tuesday September 1, 2009
Centerville 1 - Troy 1
The Elks and the visiting Troy Trojans played to a 1-1 draw tonight in a half-lit Centerville Soccer stadium.

Midway through the first half the 3 home side light standards lost power and didn't return to operation the rest of the evening. If playing on a half lighted field wasn't an enough to overcome, the Elks found themselves down 0-1 to Troy deep into the second half. Centerville was in constant attack mode through out the second half and with Troy's keeper doing a great job of keeping them in the game, it was a defensive miscue that allowed the Elks to tie the match. At about 11:30 left to play, Sophomore striker Andrew Roop took advantage of a ball mis-played by the Troy defensive and from 12 yards out placed the ball past the Troy's keeper.

The Elks are 2-0-1 on the season and travel to Springboro on Thursday September 3. Match times are 5:30 and 7:30 pm.

Saturday August 29, 2009
Centerville 4 - Westerville 0
Centerville, playing in their 2009 home opener, had four different scorers in the contest. Andrew Roop (Barnhart), Memme Onwudiwe (Dempe), Slater Morgann (Roop) and Max Quellhorst (Pauley).

Next for the Elks is Troy, at Home. Match is Tuesday September 1 at 5:30 and 7:30 pm.

Tuesday August 25, 2009
Centerville 2 - Miamisburg 0
